Job Summary:This job is responsible for performing various collection and laboratory analysis on blood, urine and other body specimens to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Specific areas of accountability may include all or one of the following disciplines: microbiology, urinalysis, coagulation, toxicology, chemistry, serology, hematology, phlebotomy and specimen processing.
Essential Duties:
- Performs specimen collections (when indicated) and laboratory analysis according to established protocol.
- Assesses the plausibility of results.
- Performs scheduled maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
- Operates LIS functions as pertains to assigned duties.
- Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and reagents.
- Keeps abreast of new technical and theoretical procedures, departmental policies and procedures, and continuingeducation.
- Assists with the orientation and training of new employees and students.
- Performs similar and incidental duties as assigned.
- Demonstrates competency in adjusting interactions and the delivery of care and/or clinical technique appropriate to address the age specific needs of the patient and/or customer.
- Pre-screens job applicants and may conduct initial employment interviews; participates in the processes for employee new hires and terminations; may conduct department-level new hire orientations.
- Provides on-the-job training to new or lower-level employees; monitors work flow, prepares work schedules and reviews work to ensure it meets quality and productivity standards; orders/maintains appropriate supply levels; identifies training needs and advises higher-level authority.
- Monitors individual staff performance and provides feedback to higher-level authority; coaches employees on procedures and protocols; may provide input into formal employee performance evaluations; may make recommendations with respect to employee pay, recognition, discipline and/or termination.
- May assist in implementing new procedures or processes; explains new and/or revised procedures, forms or other tools to staff; may demonstrate new systems, PC applications, equipment or supplies.
- Assists employees with complex/unprecedented/ambiguous matters, reviews elevated issues/situations and takes action consistent with assigned scope of authority.
Job Requirements
Education:- High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Completion of post-high school course work including computer classes, mathematics, science and phlebotomy is preferred.
- Phlebotomy Certification, a plus. At least two years experience in the lab department, preferred. Excellent phlebotomy skills a must.
- BLS-CPR from American Heart Association is preferred Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) by ASCP or equivalent is preferred.
