SENIOR UNDERWRITER

This position carries a full benefits package with company pension, 401K, etc.

As a Senior Underwriter, you will underwrite applications under general supervision. You will evaluate and take final action in an independent manner within approval authority guidelines. Approval authority through $1,500,000 and may be given second signature responsibilities.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: This position reports to a Director within the larger underwriting group.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
1. Analyze complex information and interpret to reach comprehensive medical and financial assessments based on company guidelines and policy.
Request appropriate medical and financial information from agents, doctors, laboratories, inspection companies and other information sources.
Analyze underwriting requirements received in order to properly classify risk.
Correspond, both verbally and in writing, with agents, doctors, laboratories, inspection companies and other services as necessary concerning information on applications.
Interpret MIB Codes and report new MIB Codes.
2. Perform all transactions necessary to underwrite pending applications.
3. Consult with more Senior Underwriters, Chief Underwriter, and Medical Director on cases relating to the risk selection process. Obtain cosigns as required by departmental guidelines.
4. Consult with Reinsurance companies on those more complex cases.

Job Requirements

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD HAVE:
1. Bachelors degree and a minimum of 3 years life underwriting experience OR a high school diploma with a minimum of 5 years life underwriting experience.
2. Demonstrated proficiency in medical terminology; ability to accurately report and interpret MIB codes.
3. Proficiency in financial underwriting helpful.
4. Active and regular participation in industry related programs LOMA, ALU, etc.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong PC capabilities.
6. Ability to make real-time decisions in a fast-paced environment characterized by ambiguity and change.
7. Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in handling highly sensitive or confidential information.
