Other Advantages: Serves as a Medical Technician in a Military Entrance Processing Station. Incumbent of this position provides assistance to the examining Medical Officer with applicant examination, identification of physical abnormalities (e.g., missing digits, scoliosis, pes planus), to include discovery of disqualifying enlistment/retention factors, and determination of applicants fitness for military duty.

- KEY REQUIREMENTS
- Must use restrictive and protective clothing.
- Occasional shift work (before 0600 or after 1800 hours) may be required.
- Occasionally may be required to work Saturdays.
- Collect specimens into appropriate anticoagulant, preservative or clot tubes as required by test requested.
- Review request and prioritize urgencies of requests for blood draw for HIV/DNA to ensure all required information is present.
- Package specimens for hand delivery to laboratory in accordance with all applicable Federal Standards.
- Perform customer service duties and administrative office duties such as filing of paperwork and annotating logs.
- Verify that all forms accompanying the specimens are complete and ensures that specimens are collected in the appropriate tube and labeled correctly.having experience in performing routine daily operations in each section of the laboratory, performing moderate to complex diagnostic testing on specimens of human origin in microbiology, serology, hematology, urinalysis, and chemistry by established scientific laboratory techniques to aid in diagnosis, prevention and disease management of patient population. This definition of specialized experience is;typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: applying, an extensive body of rules, procedures and operations, required to perform and evaluate the full scope of non-physician medical tests such as: Perform Ear Lavage as ordered by a Physician as well as determining abnormalities of the ear canal and/or the tympanic membrane. Correctly determine visual acuity, color vision and depth perception of applicants. Conduct and evaluate audiometric tests to correctly determine hearing levels of applicants and EKG tests to correctly determine normal and abnormal results. Physical observation, collection and processing of urine specimen, to include chain of custody and control processing.Knowledge of approved standardized Phlebotomy procedures and techniques. Perform phlebotomy ambulatory patients, with ability to use approved deviations from standard techniques to draw difficult patients. Follow Standing Operating Procedures regarding tube types and specimen amounts. This definition of specialized experience is;typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the grade (or equivalent).
- GS-04- An associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a years duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of a full-time training course of approximately a years duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. Transcripts must be submitted to verify education if qualifying based on education. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, technical school, junior college, college, or university.
- GS-05- Completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position.
- GS-06 and above- NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Two full years of graduate education or a masters degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
